Disability Employment Support Services FAQ
What is NDIS Employment Support?
NDIS Employment Support focuses on building the skills, confidence and practical capacity needed to prepare for, find and maintain employment. Supports are tailored to individual goals and may include developing communication skills, preparing for interviews and building workplace readiness.
How is Employment Support different from SLES?
Employment Support can assist participants at different stages of their employment journey, including adults seeking work or improving workplace skills. School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES) specifically assist young people transitioning from school to employment or further training. The type of support provided depends on the participant’s age, goals and NDIS plan.
Can Employment Support help with job interviews?
Yes. Support may include preparing interview responses, practising communication skills, planning what to bring, discussing workplace expectations and building confidence. The focus is on strengthening the participant’s ability to present themselves effectively and independently.
Can a support worker attend job interviews with a participant?
Where appropriate and aligned with the participant’s goals, a support worker may attend interviews to provide encouragement and practical assistance. The aim is to gradually build the participant’s confidence so they can navigate future interviews more independently.
Does Employment Support help with writing resumes?
Employment Support can include assistance to develop resumes, cover letters and basic job application skills. The process is collaborative, with a focus on helping participants understand how to represent their strengths and experiences clearly.
Can Employment Support assist with managing work schedules and appointments?
Yes. Supports may include developing organisational skills, managing calendars, planning transport, understanding rosters and preparing for workplace responsibilities. The goal is to build sustainable independence in managing employment-related tasks.
Is Employment Support only for people who are ready to work immediately?
No. Employment Support can assist participants at different stages, including those exploring career interests, building foundational skills or increasing confidence before seeking work. Supports are aligned with each participant’s readiness and goals.
What funding category does Employment Support fall under?
Employment-related supports are generally aligned with Capacity Building funding categories, particularly those related to finding and keeping a job. Participants should confirm with their support coordinator or plan manager how supports align with their individual NDIS plan.
Is Employment Support personalised?
Yes. Supports are guided by the participant’s goals, strengths, interests and learning style. The approach is structured but flexible, focusing on long-term skill development rather than short-term task completion.
