Understanding the NDIS

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a government-funded program that supports Australians with permanent and significant disabilities. It provides funding to help NDIS participants live more independently, access the services they need, and achieve their goals. The NDIS program is overseen by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).

What is an NDIS Plan?

Your NDIS plan is a written agreement that outlines your goals and the supports you’ll receive. It’s unique to you and reviewed regularly by the NDIA to make sure it still suits your needs.

How is NDIS Plan Funding Managed?

You can choose how your NDIS funding is managed:

  • NDIA-managed: The NDIS pays providers directly

  • Plan-managed: A third-party Plan Manager helps handle payments and budgets

  • Self-managed: You manage your funding and choose how it is spent

Good Company Disability Services can offer support to participants who are either Plan Managed or Self Managed

Who is the NDIS for?

You may be eligible for the NDIS if you:

  • Are under 65 years of age

  • Are an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or Protected Special Category Visa holder

  • Have a permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to take part in everyday activities

If you’re not sure if you’re eligible, you can contact the NDIA via their website ndis.gov.au to check your eligibility.

What Support can the NDIS Provide?

NDIS funding is tailored to your individual needs and may include:

  • Help with daily living (e.g., cooking, cleaning, dressing)
  • Therapy supports (e.g., occupational therapy, speech therapy, psychology)
  • Transport assistance
  • Assistive technology and home modifications
  • Community access and social participation
  • Support to find or keep a job

How Do I Apply for the NDIS?

  • Check your eligibility – Visit ndis.gov.au and contact the NDIA via the details listed on their website

  • Make an access request – You’ll need to provide personal details and supporting documents

  • Meet with a planner – A Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or NDIA planner will help create your NDIS plan

  • Start your supports – Once your plan is approved, you can start choosing providers and using your funding
