Life’s Better When You’re Connected

What Is Social and Community Participation Support?

Under the NDIS Core Supports, Social and Community Participation funding allows individuals to access supports that promote active community involvement and personal development. Our services focus on building confidence, social skills, and independence by helping participants take part in:

  • Local events and activities

  • Sports, music, or art programs

  • Social groups and friendship circles

  • Volunteer opportunities or work experience

  • Recreational outings and public transport training

  • Faith-based or cultural gatherings

  • Education and skill-building workshops

Our mentors work one-on-one or in small groups to support participants in safely and confidently engaging with their local communities — including across Greater Perth and Melbourne suburbs such as Carlton, Footscray, Dandenong, Frankston, Joondalup, Midland, and Cannington.

Why Community Engagement Matters

Social isolation can affect wellbeing, self-esteem, and independence. That’s why we prioritise genuine connection — not just ticking boxes. Learning how to start conversations and build rapport are some of the fundamental skills we teach to help you feel calm and confident in new environments. This provides valuable opportunities to create sustainable friendships with likeminded people.

At Good Company, we:

  • Build trusted, long-term relationships between participants and mentors

  • Support individual choices — participants choose what they want to do and who they do it with

  • Celebrate diversity, culture, and personal expression

  • Focus on real-world outcomes: confidence, friendships, and community belonging

We understand that for many participants, small steps can lead to big milestones — like navigating a shopping centre independently, or attending a group class for the first time. Every win counts.

Meet People. Make Memories.

Tailored Support for All Ages and Abilities

Our approach is never one-size-fits-all. We take the time to understand each participant’s goals, interests, and challenges to deliver support that is:

  • Person-centred

  • Flexible and creative

  • Aligned with their NDIS plan goals

  • Supportive of cultural, linguistic and sensory needs

Whether you’re a young adult exploring social confidence or a mature participant reconnecting with the community, we provide respectful, non-clinical, and down-to-earth support that empowers you to thrive.

Our Mentors Make the Difference

Our experienced support mentors are the heart of Good Company. Trained in disability support, mentoring, and NDIS best practices, they bring both professional skill and human warmth to their work. With the support of a mentor, you’ll overcome your barriers and finally have the chance to experience these important connections. We carefully match participants with mentors based on personality, interests, and shared goals — because the right connection makes all the difference.

Social and Community Participation FAQ

Social and Community Participation is a support funded by the NDIS to help you take part in activities that build skills, confidence and connection. This might include joining a group, attending classes, taking part in sport or art, going on outings, or just spending time in your community with support.

Your NDIS plan provides funding for support to access and engage in community activities. Activities you can engage in with support can include:

  • Recreational or sporting events

  • Creative classes like music or art

  • Volunteering or community groups

  • Day trips and outings

  • Attending appointments or social events

  • Learning new skills (e.g., cooking, public transport, using money)

All activities are tailored to your interests, goals and plan funding.

The NDIA does not typically fund the cost of activities themselves, unless there is a therapy component that is relevant to your disability related needs. It's best to check with your Support Coordinator or the NDIA directly regarding claiming rules.

Activities can happen:

  • In the community (parks, shops, libraries, etc.)

  • At organised events or venues

  • At support hubs or group activity centres

  • In your home (if appropriate for the activity)

  • Online or virtually if needed

We are flexible and work with you to find suitable, accessible options.

We offer both options. You can:

  • Participate one-on-one with a support worker

  • Join a small group for shared social activities

  • Mix both types of support depending on your needs and comfort level

Social and community participation helps you:

  • Build confidence and social skills

  • Reduce isolation and increase wellbeing

  • Learn new things and explore your interests

  • Prepare for employment or volunteering

  • Strengthen your independence in the community

We work with you and your therapy team to link activities to the goals in your plan to ensure you're engaging in the community in a ways that benefit your learning and development.

Yes! We encourage you to take the lead in choosing what you'd like to do. We’ll support you to explore options that are fun, safe, and aligned with your goals and support funding.

Social and Community Participation can be funded under:

  • Core Supports – Assistance with Social and Community Participation (for general support in the community)

  • Capacity Building – Increased Social and Community Participation (for skill development and goal-focused engagement)

We can help you identify where this fits in your plan.

That’s encouraged! Our team loves helping participants explore new hobbies, interests, or routines. Whether it’s trying a music class or joining a new community group, we’re here to support you.

Yes. Participation support can include skill-building activities like time management, confidence, communication, and community engagement—all of which are great steps toward work readiness or volunteering.
