Short Term Accommodation (STA) and Assistance Including Respite

Supporting You with Safe, Supportive and Meaningful Short-Term Accommodation

At Good Company Disability Services, our Short Term Accommodation (STA), including respite, provides individuals with a safe and supportive environment where they can recharge, build skills, and enjoy new experiences—all while giving carers a short break. We tailor each STA experience to meet individual needs, preferences and NDIS goals, while ensuring every stay is purposeful and aligned with NDIS support plans.

Good Company Disability Services Pty Ltd is an unregistered provider of NDIS supports. We are not representatives, partners, or affiliates of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) or the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). We provide our services independently and are committed to delivering high-quality support in line with our values and the needs of the people we support.

STA and Assistance (including respite) is not a holiday.

NDIS funding for STA can only be used to cover the cost of support, not for activities, holidays or luxury services. All services delivered under STA must be reasonable and necessary in line with your NDIS plan goals. We strictly adhere to NDIS funding rules and price controls. The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) may update or modify requirements, line items or pricing structures at any time, and we can work with you and your Support Coordinator to confirm current pricing arrangements, and NDIS requirements around STA and Assistance.

What Is STA?

Short Term Accommodation (STA) is temporary, funded support for people with disability who need to live out of their usual home for a short period of time. It typically includes:

  • Self care, social/community support, and mentoring

  • Accommodation in a fully accessible home

  • Meals and daily living assistance

  • Participation in community activities and capacity-building opportunities within reason and in line with your NDIS goals.

STA is funded under Core Supports (Assistance with Daily Life) and is generally available for up to 28 days per year, depending on individual needs and plan funding. It’s important to check with your Support Coordinator or LAC to determine if you’re eligible for STA and Accommodation.

It’s important to remember that the NDIA provides funding for disability related support, and not for the purpose of holidays, recreation, or entertainment. Should you wish to undertake paid recreational activities, we can support you to plan and book them as part of your support, however you will be required to pay for them privately.

Please note: The information referenced above are accurate according to the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits in effect at the time of publication. Short Term Accommodation (STA) and Assistance Including Respite FAQ

STA is a temporary support that allows an NDIS participant to stay somewhere other than their usual home. It is often used to provide respite for families and carers or to help participants build independence.

Yes, respite is often another term for STA. It provides participants with a break from their usual routine while giving their carers short-term relief. STA is broader in purpose and can include capacity-building and skill development in addition to carer respite.

No. STA is not a holiday. NDIS funding can only be used for the cost of support provided during the stay. It cannot be used for leisure holidays, luxury accommodation, or non-disability-related travel. We can work with your Support Coordinator to ensure current NDIS requirements are adhered to.

The NDIS typically funds up to 28 days of STA per year, which can be used flexibly—for example, as a few weekend stays or a block of several days. Actual funding depends on your NDIS plan and goals. It's important to remember that eligibility or funding rules can change at any time at the discretion of the NDIA, so it's best to work with your Support Coordinator to determine the current rules and requirements, or consult the NDIS directly if that's easier for you.

STA generally includes:

  • 24/7 support by qualified staff

  • Accommodation for the NDIS participant in a safe, accessible environment

  • Self Care Support

  • Community access and activities

  • Assistance with tasks of daily living such as preparing meals, doing laundry and household assistance

Remember that the NDIA may choose to amend what STA and Assistance includes at their discretion, so we can work with you and your Support Coordinator to ensure NDIS rules and requirements are adhered to.

STA may be suitable for:

  • NDIS participants who need support away from home temporarily

  • Families or carers who require respite

  • Participants working on independent living goals

  • People with high or complex support needs requiring overnight assistance

Yes, as long as it is reasonable and necessary. We offer a variety of accommodation options based on availability, location and your individual support needs. We work closely with you and your Support Coordinator to ensure the best fit for your goals and preferences.

STA is funded under Core Supports – Assistance with Daily Life. If your plan includes flexible Core Supports and aligns with your goals, you may be eligible. Your Support Coordinator or Plan Manager can help confirm your funding.

Possibly. If the goal is aligned with your NDIS plan and the support is reasonable and necessary, the NDIS may fund the support worker component. However, the cost of non-supported accommodation like hotels is not usually covered. Speak with us, your Support Coordinator, or the NDIA directly for guidance.

If your STA stay is fully covered by your plan and in line with the NDIS Price Guide, there should be no out-of-pocket costs. If you elect to undertake activities that are not funded by the NDIA, then you will need to pay for these privately. We’ll always provide a service agreement with transparent pricing before your support booking.
